Home Nursing Care Companions provide essential support to individuals in their own homes who need assistance due to illness, disability, or old age. They play a key role in maintaining the client’s comfort, emotional well-being, and a safe, healthy environment. Duties include companionship, emotional support, light health-related tasks, meal prep, hygiene support, and daily living assistance under supervision.

The role emphasizes compassion, respect, and communication, following agency protocols and Illinois State nursing standards.

Responsibilities:

• Provide emotional support, companionship, and engage in friendly conversation.
• Assist with maintaining contact between clients and their families, friends, and the outside world.
• Accompany clients to medical appointments, social gatherings, or errands.
• Provide assistance with hygiene-related tasks (bathing, oral care, grooming).
• Plan and prepare simple, healthy meals based on client needs.
• Perform light housekeeping and organize mail or correspondence.
• Help with personal tasks such as dressing, mobility, and positioning.
• Monitor and report any physical or behavioral changes in the client’s condition.
• Ensure client safety by recognizing emergency situations and knowing proper procedures.
• Maintain cleanliness and infection control within the home setting.
• Support the Care Team by documenting activities, providing feedback, and attending training or meetings.
• Assist with personal care as outlined in the written care plan, in coordination with a supervising nurse.
• Promote respect for the client’s dignity, privacy, and choices.

Qualifications:

• Experience in home nursing or senior care (preferred)
• Basic knowledge of infection control, hygiene, and safe mobility practices
• Ability to observe and report changes in patient condition
• Compassionate, patient, and respectful personality
• Strong communication and record-keeping skills
• Willingness to attend in-service training and orientation sessions
